For the uninitiated, being interviewed by a journalist can be a frightening experience, but our media training course helps make it a rewarding one. Our sessions help executives, leaders and spokespeople understand how the media works, how journalists operate and involve practical, real-life experience handling interviews. The training is fun and interactive and we’ve helped hundreds of our participants gain the confidence to handle interviews with ease.
Work with an experienced journalist
Having spent nearly 15 years as one of Australia’s most popular and respected journalists, Chris Urquhart has a wealth of experience. Chris worked around Australia and around the world on TV programs including Today, A Current Affair, ABC’s 730, Nine News and Seven News and was a familiar voice as a newsreader and reporter on radio stations including 2GB, 2Day FM, Triple M and Nova. He's still a regular guest commentator on several TV programs and an opinion columnist for news.com.au. Chris is able to share his knowledge of the industry to help participants understand the media landscape and how reporters operate, as well as anticipate the types of questions they’re likely to be asked in interviews.
GET INTERACTIVE, ON-CAMERA EXPERIENCE
In our media training sessions, every participant has the opportunity to be interviewed on-camera in the “hot seat", several times in realistic interview scenarios. This “lights, camera, action" approach helps demystify the interview process and helps spokespeople get comfortable in front of the camera. As part of training, we watch the interviews back on-screen for instant review, critique and feedback. Depending upon your needs, as well as TV interviews, we can also help you rehearse interviews for radio, podcast, print and online interviews. Participants leave ready to handle a range of different interview styles, from proactive promotion of the organisation, to dealing with criticism in times of crisis. A key part of our media training program is helping participants learn learn techniques for how difficult and unexpected questions can be handled in an interview setting.
MEDIA TRAINING TAILORED TO YOU
Every business is different and we don’t believe in a cookie-cutter approach to our media training. We tailor each course to our individual client’s needs and industry. We work closely with the key messaging that is unique to your organisation. In the class, we study real life examples of how organisations similar to yours have appeared in the media, and devise realistic scenarios that will match the likely interview situations you will find yourself in the real world. We’ve worked with leaders across dozens of industries including politics, sport, health and fitness, property development, finance, banking and more.
SMALL GROUPS AND LARGE GROUPS
We offer a flexible approach to training, with our program usually delivered as either a half-day or full-day class. Our media training can be adapted for groups of any size, depending upon your organisation’s needs. We’ve trained groups of up to 50+ participants, but typically work with a group of 4-5 leaders from an organisation in one session. We usually recommend that several members of your leadership team attend the course. This ensures that not only do you have multiple media spokespeople trained and ready, but also ensures that your messaging will be consistent. As well as group training, we also offer bespoke 1-on-1 sessions for executives.

We can visit your offices anywhere in Australia or alternatively, we welcome you to come to our headquarters at Surry Hills in Sydney, where participants can experience half or full day sessions in our spacious and well equipped training rooms.
